Bakcou Mule Review: E-Bike Overview
If you’re an avid sportsman, then you’re probably already familiar with Bakcou, a Utah-based e-bike manufacturer that has been building some of the industry’s best hunting e-bikes since 2016.
The brand’s best-selling model, the Bakcou Mule e-bike comes with an impressive spec sheet. Like Bakcou’s higher-priced Storm, the Mule is powered by a BAFANG Ultra mid-drive motor that can kick out a max output of 1500W. This tough hunting e-bike produces 160Nm of torque and is capable of delivering impressive range (the exact distance depends on the battery option selected).
Up front is an adjustable BCEB GT MRK 100mm AIR suspension fork which works beautifully well with the 26-inch by 4-inch MAXXIS Minion fat tires. The Mule’s handlebars are nice and wide at 740mm, providing much-needed stability that a bike like this requires.
Gearing is handled by a smooth shifting, 9-speed Shimano Alivio setup and the bike also packs Tektro hydraulic disc brakes for top-notch stopping power. The Mule ships as a Class 3 electric bike but the 1000W BAFANG Ultra mid-drive motor can be dialed back to 750W and the included throttle can be disabled if you need to configure it as a Class 2 or Class 1 e-bike.
There’s also a comfortable Selle Royal saddle, BAFANG LCD display, and 400-lumen headlight for increased safety and visibility in low-light conditions.
Lastly, one of the things that we really love about Bakcou is that they work hard to meet the needs of riders by providing plenty of customization options. In addition to the four battery configurations, the Mule is available in a wide range of colors, including:
- Matte Black
- Matte Desert Tan
- Kuiu Verde 2.0
- Matte Army Green
- Kings XK7
With its 18″ frame and 67-pound weight (without the battery), the Bakcou Mule is a big bike. It has a standover height of 29.5″ and is ideal for riders between 5’9″ and 6’4″.

As you might imagine, performance is a category that the hardtail Bakcou Mule absolutely crushes. The included BAFANG Ultra mid-drive motor provides next-level torque and this bike climbs steep hills and powers over rough terrain without breaking a sweat. Braking performance is also outstanding, thanks to the bike’s Tektro hydraulic brakes.
The massive 26″ x 4″ MAXXIS Minion tires are an excellent choice for snow, mud, sand, and gravel, delivering outstanding stability, comfort, and traction.
The Mule also comes with a convenient walk assist mode which really comes in handy for those times when the bike is loaded down with gear or pulling a trailer.
As Bakcou bikes are known for, the Mule is extremely well-built and the included componentry is top-shelf. Unlike other e-bikes that are made with light duty in mind, the Bakcou Mule Elite electric hunting bike is designed to be ridden hard in conditions that most other rides are unable to perform well in. Able to withstand extreme abuse, the Mule is crafted with high attention to detail by a company that stands behind everything they make.
The Mule is an imposing ride that turns heads everywhere it’s ridden. One look at this bike tells you it’s no toy — the aggressive MAXXIS fat tires, front suspension fork, and utilitarian rear cargo rack announce to onlookers that this dog can hunt.
As mentioned, the Mule hunting bike is offered in a wide variety of attractive finishes, and the camo options are especially nice-looking in our opinion. It’s far easier for companies to simply offer one finish for its bikes, but Bakcou really goes above and beyond with six great finish options.
This is another category in our review where Backou’s hunting bikes really shine. The Mule comes well-equipped with a nice accessory package that includes a rear rack, front and rear fenders, tire liners, and a 400-lumen headlight.
In addition to the included accessories, Bakcou sells a nice range of replacement parts and hunting bike accessories, including trailers, batteries, chargers, racks, bags, and more.
If you’re looking to customize your Mule with a trailer and other accessories, we highly recommend checking out the Bakcou Elite Hunter Package from our friends over at eBike Generation. This special bundle provides outdoorsmen with everything they need to make the most of Bakcou’s impressive Mule platform. Included in the bundle are the following accessories:
- Trailer — choose from Bakcou’s Folding Deer Trailer, Little Cub Hauler (amazing if you have kids), Hunting Cargo Trailer, or Folding Hunting Trailer)
- Trail-side repair toolkit
- Dual-use pannier bag set
- Bakcou 750W decal
Bakcou’s hunting e-bikes come with a 1-year warranty and lifetime customer support. The brand also provides its customers with a 30-day return policy to ensure satisfaction, although a 15% restocking fee is charged.
Bakcou is extremely easy to reach, offering customers a variety of contact options. You can contact the company through live chat on its website (this sends a text to their staff members, resulting in near-immediate responses), telephone, and a website contact form.
Whenever we rate e-bikes, we always test the responsiveness of the brand’s customer service department and Bakcou outperforms most other brands in this category. As mentioned, the live chat feature on the company’s website will get you a near-instant reply, and we typically get a response to our email inquiries in about an hour…
