Bakcou Mule Review: E-Bike Overview

If you’re an avid sportsman, then you’re probably already familiar with Bakcou, a Utah-based e-bike manufacturer that has been building some of the industry’s best hunting e-bikes since 2016.

The brand’s best-selling model, the Bakcou Mule e-bike comes with an impressive spec sheet. Like Bakcou’s higher-priced Storm, the Mule is powered by a BAFANG Ultra mid-drive motor that can kick out a max output of 1500W. This tough hunting e-bike produces 160Nm of torque and is capable of delivering impressive range (the exact distance depends on the battery option selected).

Up front is an adjustable BCEB GT MRK 100mm AIR suspension fork which works beautifully well with the 26-inch by 4-inch MAXXIS Minion fat tires. The Mule’s handlebars are nice and wide at 740mm, providing much-needed stability that a bike like this requires.

Gearing is handled by a smooth shifting, 9-speed Shimano Alivio setup and the bike also packs Tektro hydraulic disc brakes for top-notch stopping power. The Mule ships as a Class 3 electric bike but the 1000W BAFANG Ultra mid-drive motor can be dialed back to 750W and the included throttle can be disabled if you need to configure it as a Class 2 or Class 1 e-bike.

There’s also a comfortable Selle Royal saddle, BAFANG LCD display, and 400-lumen headlight for increased safety and visibility in low-light conditions.

With its 18″ frame and 67-pound weight (without the battery), the Bakcou Mule is a big bike. It has a standover height of 29.5″ and is ideal for riders between 5’9″ and 6’4″.

Performance and Ride

As you might imagine, performance is a category that the hardtail Bakcou Mule absolutely crushes. The included BAFANG Ultra mid-drive motor provides next-level torque and this bike climbs steep hills and powers over rough terrain without breaking a sweat. Braking performance is also outstanding, thanks to the bike’s Tektro hydraulic brakes.

The massive 26″ x 4″ MAXXIS Minion tires are an excellent choice for snow, mud, sand, and gravel, delivering outstanding stability, comfort, and traction.

The Mule also comes with a convenient walk assist mode which really comes in handy for those times when the bike is loaded down with gear or pulling a trailer.

As Bakcou bikes are known for, the Mule is extremely well-built and the included componentry is top-shelf.
